Update # 199

8 Years

Yes, you’re correct, this is Wednesday not Thursday. Ken’s work schedule will be a bit different tomorrow so he’ll be coming to StL on Thursday rather than Friday. Since he sends out the bulk email, I need to do the update tonight.

Jeff is progressing well. In fact, he surprised quite a few people in the hospital when he walked with a regular walker this week. He was worn out but Jeff said it felt good. The one front door receptionist, who happened to see Jeff, commented “I didn’t know you were so tall”.

One therapist even had Jeff try getting up/down a 4 inch step. Then another had Jeff try the 6 inch stair. Again, quite a bit of work but a “step” in the right direction.

The wheelchair is always right behind Jeff for when his legs say enough and he must sit to rest. Jeff still uses the wheelchair the vast majority of the day but his plan is to be able to leave the hospital with only a walker so more muscle building and strength training must take place. We know these are the essential pieces to Jeff’s every day life.

Jeff’s trach site is healing very well. The area is getting smaller each day.

The staff is beginning to think of Jeff leaving the hospital since they’ve started talking about tub height, toilet height, and bed height at home but we have not heard of a definite date.

It is amazing to see Jeff walk with minimal assistance. We remember what little he could do when he entered rehab and what he has accomplished. There are 2 student therapists training with Jeff’s team who will graduate in the next few weeks. They have been told by the main therapists how wonderful but rare it is to get a patient like Jeff. Someone young who was just weakened from a lengthy bedridden illness and who recovered with quick and great strides. These people are just giddy with happiness and smiles just seeing what Jeff can do each day.

We know your prayers have helped Jeff achieve these goals. And your prayers will help him continue to reach that goal of home to Iowa and back to work. We love your notes, emails, and the hugs and love you send us.

love,

Marcia
