Update #212
13 Years
This update is a bit different in content. Yes, we want to remember this day 13 years ago but more importantly, we want to honor the man who made Jeff's transplant possible.
Last Friday, Dec. 6th, Matt retired from the Army after 30 years of service. Thank you for your service! Matt's years of hard work earned him the rank of Colonel. His dedication to his position took him around the world. He was always compassionate with the troops under his command.
We also want to give thanks to Marcia who has loved and supported Matt during his career. Her sacrifice during Matt's long absences is to be commended. And thanks to Stephanie for sharing her Dad with so many others. We know you are proud of him.
The Sandlins are blessed to have become a part of Matt's whole family. Our times together are always cherished.
The Department of Defense played a part in this whole process. One day in Kansas years ago, they had servicemen become part of the national bone marrow list. Then in 2006, the DOD flew Matt from Japan to Washington. D.C. for his stem cell donation.
Matt had some rough days but he endured and produced 136 million stem cells. A large bag infused into Jeff that not only changed Jeff's blood type but gave him 13 years, and counting, of new life.
Matt, we are thankful for your years of Army service but are forever grateful for the giving of yourself to save a stranger's life. Our prayers are for you and Marcia to enjoy these well-deserved years of retirement. We know you'll both continue to show love in future endeavors.
Congratulations, love, prayers, and gratitude to you, Colonel Matt,
Marcia, Ken, Jeff, Meridith
